Ce quartette fut le premier à populariser les spirituals jusque dans les bars, célébrant ainsi les noces du sacré et du profane. Entre 1941 et 1947, la formation est au sommet de sa carrière ? ils furent les premiers Noirs à chanter au Constitution Hall de Washington.
